Laura Cartensen is the Director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, which explore creative ways to solve the problems of people over 50 while improving the lives of people of all ages. Best known in academia for socioemotional selectivity theory, a life-span theory of motivation, and known as the Longevity Guru. Cartensen uses logical appeals to state what and how the older can live their lives better. Culture, the way humans think, and technology advances could make living longer lives better. “Everybody wants to live longer, and science is starting to make that happen. Cartensen says “culture” is a way of living longer lives. Today’s culture teaches us to get an education, get married, have kids, buy a house, work, and retire. This way of culture actually shortens the length of the live we are living. She describes this culture as the “crux of the longevity challenge”.  Also, today’s culture do not offers many opportunities in cures or treatments for chronic diseases. Since they’re a limited resource of treatments, when an older person gets sick, it can be fatal. Lastly, this culture does not guide people on how to finance decades-long retirement. Therefore, people worries about paying bills, health care, running of money, and losing their relevance. With culture, come emotions, feelings, and which Cartensen explains.
