Course Project Week #: 2

How would you define a network? What is bandwidth? What is a NIC? List three types of media used for network connections.

A network is any way of connecting stand alone computers or devices on one shared platform. For example there is WiFi, wireless networks, DSL, mobile hotspots, VPNs, and broadband. Bandwidth is the amount of information that can be transmitted over a network in a given amount of time, usually expressed in bits per second or bps. A NIC (Network Interface Card) is a computer hardware component that connects a computer to a computer network. Three different media used for network connections are:

Describe a situation in which you needed to access a network and had difficulty. What steps did you take to access the network? If you have not run across this, give an explanation of a network you used and some benefits of using the network.

I had a situation where I didn’t know what was wrong with the mobile network on my phone but I desperately needed to check my email and I wasn’t in the house. At the time I was going to get something to eat, so I stopped at McDonalds and used their WiFi to access my email on my phone.

How will networking impact you in your professional life?

Everything is on a network now. At my last job we installed a scanning system for our incoming supplies that came with a stand alone computer that had a hotspot that was password protected. The computers in the lab were already on a shared network but for some reason leadership didn’t want the data from the packages on the same network as the one that contained all of the patient information.
