OF THOUSAND OF CHINESE SOLDIERS STORMED INTO NORTH KOREA LONG BEFORE WE COULD REACH THE CHINESE BORDER. MACARTHUR

WAS REPLACED BY PRESIDENTIAL ORDER BECAUSE THE GENERAL PUBLICLY DENOUNCED TRUMAN'S STRATEGY. WE WERE RELATIVELY UNPREPARED FOR THIS MOVE BY CHINA AND WE SUFFERED TERRIBLE CASUALTIES.

THERE WERE ALMOST AS MANY AMERICANS KILLED IN THE THREE YEARS OF THE KOREAN WAR (STILL CONSIDERED A "POLICE ACTION") AS THERE WERE IN THE TEN YEARS OF THE VIET NAM CONFLICT.

I WAS THERE AND IT WASN'T NEARLY AS MUCH FUN AS IT WAS PORTRAYED IN "MASH".

What President Truman did to fire MacArthur was first and foremost political based on his own low performance within the polls. General MacArthur returned to the United States after not having set foot in the U.S.A. for more than 14 years at the time. When General MacArthur returned he was given ticket tape parades in San Francisco and New York City to which at that date had never been so large prior to this event; his was even larger than that of General Dwight D. Eisenhower upon his return from Europe following the conclusion of WW II. Second, President Truman was not a good leader during the time of the Korean War; General MacArthur was not as bad as some make him out to be ~ somewhere in the middle is the underlying truth that even in his memoirs President Truman conveniently overlooked to avoid embarrassing facts upon himself. General MacArthur provided for a more efficient rebuild and subsequent operation of the new post war government in Japan than any other person/entity could have ever accomplished.

At the beginning of the war, the North chased the South almost to the tip of the peninsula. Once the US got involved, we chased the North back. So far back, in fact, that we were at the Yalu River which made China very nervous. We also had many in the US calling for the US armed forces to continue into China.
