Question 3 A

Cathy

Cathy is gifted academically and has a deep adoration of her father. This is clearly juxtaposed with her relationship with her mother, which appears to not be a supportive relationship. Cathy’s mother is also overly involved with Lucy and this must stir some feelings of resentment from Cathy. Cathy started experiencing anorexia in matric, which may be attributed to her having to face it alone and having the expectation of doing well. Cathy is also in a bind as the protector of her younger sister and May of internalized some aspects of these relationships into a form of self-torture, which may include the nerves and the anorexic affect thereof. She has a lot to live up to when she looks at her dad. She also has limited contact with her gran whom she is attached to.

Tom

Tom believes he married below his class and has also struggled with the effects of having his family oppose the union of him and his wife Joan. Tom feels the need to protect the sister of Cathy by playing down Cathy’s achievement. He is also immersed in his work and this may be in an effort to avoid or distract him from the constant conflict that he experiences with his wife.

Joan

Joan is exceptionally close with Cathy’s daughter and may have picked up on the adoration of Cathy for her dad and because of the feelings that this evokes in her she plays down the achievements of Cathy. She is experiencing the rejection she suffers from Tom’s Family in her own home as the daughter can be subconsciously making her feel rejected by idolizing her dad. She has an attachment to the younger sister, maybe as a way of finding unconditional acceptance from one member of the family.

Rose

Rose is attached to Cathy but only has limited contact with her.

Lindy

Lindy seeks attention and has been almost forgotten between the attachment of Tom and Cathy and Lucy and Joan. She seeks attention. She needs assistance academically but finds it in the form of the person...
