Gender Inequality

Gender inequality remains an issue in society across the world. From the beginning of life gender inequality is pertinent and obvious in many countries. Many countries do not consider women as equal and do not give them rights all decisions are made from them including clothing, marital choices, employment (if allowed), pay, but instead they basically become women who just bear children for a man. Society in itself is a product of what we have instilled amongst our children. We teach our children from early on in life the gender inequalities from the toys they play with and how they should act based on gender. We expect that little girls will be mothers one day and boys will become the breadwinners based on our societal values. “Women’s place in man’s lifecycle has been that of nurturer, caretaker, and helpmate…”(Gillian) or we stereotype our children and find that “It is more acceptable for women than for men to break down in tears.” (Noddings)

Utilitarianism is about moral equality that defines what is right and wrong. It is a product of what is the best interest of others before our own. Utilitarianism is an ultimate belief that it has to be for the greater good of all and would help the greatest number of people. Therefore, gender inequality cannot be for the greater of all good based on the utilitarian theory. The inequality of holding women back in society does not in fact create the greatest good for the majority of people.

Utilitarianism is a teleological theory whereas Teleological means that acts will only be judged as moral. Motives and intentions are not considered but it is determined by the good or bad. If it fits the principles of “the greatest good for the greatest number” then the greatest number of people would be happy.
