Beer School

In this book summary, I will be pointing out areas in the chapters that stuck out to me and giving my opinion on them. When I first started reading this book, I did not know why you would have us read a book about beer. Then I thought to myself, well this is an entrepreneurship class and you did just start Cleveland Whisky. In the first chapter titled: Steve Tells how choosing a partner is like a second marriage, there are a bunch of different paragraphs that explain his start in the business and his first career as a journalist but one in particular jumped out at me. An idea became a reality, in a lump sum Steve shook hands with Tom and agreed how their business would be handled with a limited partnership. When I was reading this, I could already tell that only a handshake was a bad idea, personally I would think that between friends, it would be good enough but what I have learned in college and through my business you need everything in writing. I laughed my ass off when he compared it to a prenuptial agreement because that is exactly what it is.

The second chapter: Steve discusses the importance of building a solid team; the first few sentenced caught my eye. He talks about how starting a business is an exhilarating, heady experience, how it is an American dream because we are a freedom, free enterprise driven country. Whenever I hear these things, it gets me very excited because I am one of these people and feel very strongly about being an entrepreneur. Then he says that 8 out of 10 businesses fail in the first year. I have defiantly heard this statistic before and never understood it until this year. I just filled and was accepted for my S-Corporation business this year and never really understood how much behind the scenes work the owner actually does.
