1) What personality traits/characteristics helped Roosevelt overcome his infantile paralysis/polio disease? He was a very persistent and willful person, who never gave up when faced with difficulties. Until the day that he died he never stopped looking for a cure and a way for him to walk again. He simply refused to believe the doctors prognoses for him that further progress was highly questionable. He was also a very intelligent and deliberate individual who understood how the political game was conducted at that time. He managed the task of convincing the public that he was getting better even though he wasn’t. Creative as he was he actually came up with a way of “walking” where he would lean all of his weight onto one wide and then by the help of a cane or another person (usually his son) he would swing his leg forward in a limping fashion and in that way he would slowly but steady progress forward, and people would never know just to what extent his paralysis actually affected him.
2) What new personality traits/characteristics did Roosevelt gain/develop through his fighting with the polio disease? As the highly privileged person he was he had never before known what it meant to really suffer, or face overwhelming difficulties in ones life. He was born into one of the richest families in the United States of America at that point of time, additionally being both handsome and intelligent he had have everything one could wish for. After the disease he would properly know what suffering means and what it is like having “genuine problems” and how to deal with them. For...
