The discussion of leadership and management as it pertains to the federal government could not be a more complicated subject, but the basics of sound management theory and implementation of proven concepts are an active part of this organization.
The leaders of our branches of government often seem to be at odds with one another, but if it were not for the common goals of a healthy republic and improving the living conditions of all its citizens; anarchy would surely reign. The president by definition is the head of the executive branch and duly elected to uphold the constitution of the United States; many people public and private disagree with the president and his policies but most revere the office. A president has the most difficult job of maintaining a leadership style to foster a healthy environment for all citizens. Past history has shown that most elections are not won by a landslide vote of approval, but usually the election results are amazingly close and in some cases it could be argued that the elected person did not acquire the top position in the land. This presents a situation much more challenging than in the normal business arena, whereas the president must motivate the country were roughly half of the people does not want him in office.
Past presidents that have been labeled as good leaders have often been less hands on than those who displayed the tendencies of micro managing. To create and maintain a healthy culture in the government it seems that those in the highest ranking offices allow the chain of command to function as it was intended. Leadership states the given objective and the subordinate levels of management carry out the plan. This type of structure is most evident in congress, as the leader of the house and senate set the agenda for which bills will be introduced, argued and possibly become laws.
