Gator Engineer,
The process of vetting innovative ideas involves a simple, yet powerful, exercise. It’s
called Form-Function-Benefit – which is a framework used to describe an innovation in
terms engineers can relate to – and in words my 12-year old niece understands. Even
better – if it helps others comprehend, and you to better communicate – the team’s
proposed innovative problem-solving solution should use an association or analogy to
describe it. For example:
“Cuisinart is the Honda of cookware.”
“eBay is the flea market of the Internet.”

Form (What it is)
A mobile phone application paired with a tracking device embedded in a pet’s collar.
Function (What it does)
Tracks the location of the collar (pet); draws a map on the cell phone in real time.
Benefit (What problem it solves…or…Why anyone cares)
Owners able to track down pets that have been stolen, ran away, or become lost.
Challenge (Poke a hole in your innovation idea….)
The pet may not be wearing the collar…….
The Form-Function-Benefit structure combines with the Three Core Innovation
Strategies – a concept addressed in the Booz & Company 2013 Global Innovation
Study (attached). Read the report to understand the concepts of Market Readers, Need
Seekers, and Technology Drivers.
Assignment #4 is a 20-point group deliverable that is due, via Canvas in the form
of a Word or PDF document, by 11pm Eastern on Sunday October 18, 2015.
Failure to submit a completed assignment on-time results in an automatic 0
points. There is no make-up option. Students are to work in self-selected teams of
4-5 on this assignment. I strongly recommend on-campus undergrads and grads team
up with each other; distance learning (EDGE) students may team up with each other.
However, on-campus and EDGE students may not form teams together. This reason is
based on practicality, geography, and availability. The self-selected teams for this
