The author “F. Scott Fitzgerald” in his book ‘ The Great Gatsby’ shows us the difficultness in achieving The American Dream. Jay Gatsby, who turns out to be a rich guy, fails to get the love of his life. So, the author creates a tragic character i.e. Jay Gatsby in order to demonstrate the limitations of The American Dream.

The American Dream always has its limitation for one to reach it. “ If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him”. Gatsby was a well-mannered guy; despite of several other options in his life, he worked as a crewman for Dan Cody. He had no hesitation working below him but was sincere and of his work. Gatsby could also be seen as smartest among all the characters in this book.“ Heightened sensitivity to the promises of life as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away.” Gatsby who was a poor guy always longed for wealth and wanted to be rich. He worked hard, even was involved in crimes just to achieve wealth in his life. He had the dignity of rich people and behaved like one. Although he had a good personality, he put himself into the track of earning money illegally. “He was left with his singularly appropriate education; the vague contour of Jay Gatsby had filled out to the substantiality of a man”. Living with Dan Cody, Gatsby had absorbed the life of the rich people. Starting from a poor family, he was able to obtain the wealth after Dan Cody died. So, from that wealth, “He and this Wolfsheim brought up a lot of side-street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter.” Selling these alcohols illegally, they had their black business run and this is how Gatsby eventually earned his money and became rich.

Society holds Gatsby back from obtaining his American Dream. Tom Buchanan always tried to put Gatsby down in every situation. He always doubted on Gatsby’s life and eventually found out...
