What is Plagiarism?

According to Ruggiero (2012), plagiarism is claiming the work of other people's ideas or words as your own. In reference to the world of academics, plagiarism is taken very seriously and reflected as a moral violation and discipline is always a following factor. Plagiarism, outside the academy world, is considered a crime. Again, discipline is a following factor which can result in prosecution. Plagiarism is morally and ethically wrong, no matter how it is utilized. In this paper, I will explain why purchasing ready-made and tailored works and term papers and turning it in to justify a course requirement is morally wrong.

Deontological Theory and Plagiarism

Deontological theories also known as “rules-based” focus on responsibilities and honesty, being nondiscriminatory, respect, and being ethical (Ruggiero, 2012). In other words, society has a duty to abide by their accountabilities when evaluating an ethical dilemma. It is wrong to plagiarize other’s work. We as individuals know that it is our responsibility to come up with our own work and not copy the works of others (Rainbow, 2002).. On the other hand, someone could argue the fact that as we learn and gather perceptions; we are drawing on other people’s ideas anyways. That does not mean to copy what others have done; instead, structure their ideas and generate your own. Based on the rules-based theory, it is our duty and responsibility to paraphrase by putting ideas in your own words and cite sources that are used to create new ideas.

Consequentialist Theory and Plagiarism

Consequentialist theories also known as “ends-based” highlights the good moral outcomes that comes from circumstances that could have resulted in a consequence after making a decision (Ruggiero, 2012).
