DIVISIBILITY AND DIVISIBILITY RULES

What is Divisibility?

Divisibility means you are able to divide a number evenly. Ex; Suppose you have a pizza with 8

slices to divide evenly between you and three friends. Each person can two even slices because

8/4 is equal to 2.

Topic of Divisibility

A divisibility rule is a shortcut for discovering weather a given number is divisible by a fixed

divisor without performing the division, usually by examining its digits. The two basic rules for

finding out weather the number is divisible or not by any particular number by any particular

number is if the divisor is a prime or composite number. If the divisor is a prime, we can readily

check the divisor for it. If the divisor is a composite number do factorization of a divisor into

prime factors.

Divisibility Rule for #6

A number is divisible by 6 if the number is divisible by two and three.

Applying the Divisibility Rule for Given Number:(181440)

A number is divisible by two if it is even or ends in 0,2,4,6, and 8. Since 181440 ends in zero it

can be evenly divided. 181440/2 =90,720

A number is divisible by three if the sum of digits adds up to a multiple of three. 1+8+1+4+4+0

=18

1+8 =9

9+1 =10

10+4 =14

14+4 =18

18+0 =18

Since 18 is a multiple of three it can be evenly divided by 181440.

90720/2 =45,360

A number is divisible by 5 if it ends in 5 or 0. Since 181440 ends in zero it is divisible by 5.

A number is divisible by 6 if the number is divisible by two and three.

If you double the last digit and subtract it from the rest of the number and the answer is 0 or

divisible by 7
