Assessment of Risk Assessments

Joshua Malott

Columbia Southern University

This article was about a couple different types of risk assessments that are used in machine guarding, but could be done the same in any aspect. This one was particular about machine guarding a factory with about one hundred (100) machines and how much money a company would have to spend to get an efficient risk assessment done. It seems as though to have an assessment done for roughly one hundred (100) machines it could cost in the range of 35,000 dollars and take months to get the results back. The article pointed out that having a high-level risk assessment done could cut the time down to only a couple weeks and save the company money, like, only a fraction of the cost. This article was great in making awareness that a ton of money does not need to be spent in order to get the same results as a fast pace assessment (Harris, 2015).

Some of the key points to this article had to be that when looking at something you are doing a risk assessment on, look at it as though everything is trying to kill you. This can put a lot more processes under the microscope. Another good point was to make sure the person doing the assessment is competent and able to such a large number of machines. A key factor to doing the high-level risk assessment was to find out basically which machines were the most dangerous and which ones needed to have a further risk assessment done. The entire process of the high-level risk assessment is designed to be fast, very efficient, budget friendly while producing results in a fraction of time with once again cost cutting in mind. The high-level risk assessment safety check needs to include a written report. The written report shall include a pass or fail for each safe guarding criteria that was reviewed. It should have how each machine's key safety categories or criteria are rated. Following up with recommendations for the next actions and possibly which machines...
