The Drover’s wife, by Henry Lawson, is a story about a devoted woman, who lived with her four children and a snake dog in a bush. Having left by her husband, she needed both to take care of the children and earn for a living to support her family. She fought many catastrophes; one of those was a Krait, a dangerous snake coming into her house that she had to protect her children carefully. Before she managed to kill the snake, she had not found the solution to deal with that situation. Therefore, she had to stay awake sitting near her children to look after them during the night. Finally, together with her alligator, the snake dog, she was finally able to kill the snake during the dawn, and the family were survived.
In this story, I really admire the woman for her portrayal of strong and independent, and challenge confrontation. Firstly, living apart from her husband, she could manage to survive and look after her four children. On her own, she struggled a lot of battles, which made her stronger than a normal housewife. Beside her independence, she also proved her challenge confrontation in certain circumstances. For instance, she was brave enough to join hands killing the snake with the alligator. Others are the obvious examples of how she struggled to move on her life in spite of physical and mental battles such as natural disasters and the memory of her children’s dead. This two quality of life makes her a deserved mother of independence and challenges.

In the story, without the husband, the whole family lived in hardship and danger for several times. With presence of the breadwinner, each of them would have lived in a better condition. The story also portrayed us another vital lesson about the contribution and sacrifice of single mother...
