WHAT IS EMAIL?

Messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network.

Email, e-mail or electronic mail is the transmission of messages (emails or email messages) over electronic networks like the internet.

Short for electronic mail, the transmission of messages over communications networks. The messages can be notes entered from the keyboard or electronic files stored on disk. Most mainframes, minicomputers, and computer networks have an e-mail system. Some electronic-mail systems are confined to a single computer or network, but others have gateways to other computer systems, enabling users to send electronic mail anywhere in the world. Companies that are fully computerized make extensive use of e-mail because it is fast, flexible, and reliable.

WHY DO WE USE EMAIL

We use email because it’s free. Once you’re online, there is no further expense. Sent and received messages and attachments can be stored safely, logically and reliably.  It's a lot easier to organize emails than paper. It is very easy to communicate effectively with anybody within the office or anywhere in the world regardless of where they are situated. It is easy to use, simply type the name of the recipient, a subject line and your message and click the send button. It speeds up the workflow process, documents can be sent for comment, and corrections can be made quickly. And lastly emailing saves paper and printing costs.
