Read Chapters 1 and 2 and pages 50-56 of the textbook.(Elementary Statistics Using JMP)
Read the short section on levels of measurements (including examples and exercises) on the website below:

1. In your own words describe the difference between level of measurement and modeling type.
Each level of measurement will have a different modeling type than another. For example, nominal scales will provide information for subjects with no specific order. These will include characteristics of a person, names, towns people live in, etc. Ordinal scales provide rankings such as class ranks, social class, or the order of finish in a race. Interval scales show scores for tests that may have no definite zero like temperature scales or the score of a math test. Ratio scales are usually counts of a given amount of time or a number such as time to complete a task or the number of errors made in a specified time period.
2. For each of the variables below give the level of measurement and the modeling type.
• Weight (in pounds)-Ratio
• Alma Mater- Nominal
• Temperature (°F)- Interval scale
• Class level (Freshman, Sophomore, etc.)-Ordinal
• Number of credit hours-Ratio
3. Go through the 5 Why’s process with the following problem statement:
“I have a low GPA.”
For each why give a reasonable response to the why. After the 5th why give a workable solution.
Why: I do not pass my tests.
Why: I do not study hard enough to pass my tests.
Why: I study last minute or the night before.
Why: I prioritize other things before I study.
Why: I think they are more important at the time.
If I were to have a low GPA, I would spend more time in the library or another quiet place with no distractions so that I could study. The more time that students put into a class, the more that student will learn about the material. As long as a student has the will to learn and has their priorities straight, it is...
