PREDICTING COLLEGE GRADES

Which variables influence the grade point average of college freshmen?

UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM 31 MAY 2010

In this study college GPA is tried to be declared by several variables. High school GPA, verbal and mathematic SAT scores turn out to be significant variables. Initially 6 dummy variables were added for having a major (in science, social science, humanities or arts), living on campus and attending public high school. After regression these dummy variables turned out to be insignificant. The conclusions of this investigation are therefore similar to those of previous investigation. College GPA should at least be declared by high school GPA and SAT scores. However, these variables only explain about 20 percent of the variance in college GPA. Next investigations should try to discover more variables to predict college GPA.
