SCIENCE HOMEWORK

“TEACHING MY PARENTS”

TOPIC: Mitosis and Meiosis

ACTIVITY/TASK: using your textbook and the other materials that you have as reference points (if needed) you are to explain each of the following concepts to your parents/guardians either verbally, diagrammatically or by performing a role play and then turn in this sheet.

1. Describe the stages of mitosis (diagrams may be helpful).

These stages are prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During mitosis, the pairs of chromatids condense and attach to fibers that pull the sister chromatids to opposite sides of the cell. The cell then divides in cytokinesis, to produce two daughter cells.

2. List some problems for cells that grow too big.

3. Explain what cancer is and identify some causes as well as some treatment options. (Be sure to discuss the two types of tumors).

4. Explain what stem cells are as well as discuss the advantages and disadvantages of their use. (Be sure to discuss the 3 types).

5. Distinguish between autosome and sex chromosomes.

6. Differentiate between haploid and diploid as well as gamete and somatic cell.

7. Describe the stages of meiosis (diagrams may be helpful).

8. Explain how meiosis contributes to genetic variability.

9. Differentiate between asexual and sexual reproduction.
