For example, let’s say old navy made a decision to install touch screen kiosks in all of its locations with direct links to e-commerce web sites for online shopping and exclusive internet offers with old navy. This type of offer might attract new customers and build a following because of the ease of shopping options and exclusive offers the store has for its customer’s online customers. The store may then also offer price matching if the end user finds a better price elsewhere. It may also keep old customers around if they were on the fence about staying. So when a company or store uses strategic information systems they can offer products and services to its customers that give it a clear advantage over the competition.
2. The explosion of internet, intranets, and extranets in the late 1990’s had a dramatic and everlasting impression on information systems for both the business side of things as well as e commerce. Internet based and Web enabled process that companies utilize range from data gathering for customer satisfaction surveys and preferences, data distribution, such as quarterly earnings to be sent out to company shareholders, e commerce to include online books, movies anything you can think of, networking between branches of the same company, tele conferencing and the list goes on. The reach of the internet and its partners is global and ever expanding.
