HCI studies the interaction between users and information systems. It is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and the study of major phenomena surrounding them.

I completely agree with the study which states that there should be more focus on usability in corporations as this would definitely boost their profit margins. There is substantial empirical evidence that employing the processes, techniques, and tools developed by the HCI community can dramatically decrease costs and increase productivity. A usability analysis of a proposed workstation saved a telephone company $2 million per year in operating costs. Another study reported savings due to the use of usability engineering of $41,700 in a small application used by 23,000 marketing personnel, and $6,800,000 for a large business application used by 240,000 employees. These savings were a result of decreased time for performing the tasks, reduction in the number of errors, reduced user disruption, elimination of training, reduced burden on support staff and avoidance of changes in software after release.

Users will now expect highly effective and easy to learn interfaces for information systems and developers now understand the important role the interfaces play. Surveys show that over 50% of the design and programming effort on projects is devoted to the user interface portion.

As computing systems become increasingly central to our society, HCI research will continue to grow in importance. The field can expect a stream of rapidly changing technological developments, challenges associated with integrating research from multiple disciplines, and crucially important problems to address.
