To ensure the safety of the population around train crossings, railway barriers are as important as the railways themselves. Plumettaz SA, a typical, industrial, export-driven SMB based in Bex is one of many manufacturers of these complex devices and has shared some of their operating process data in order for us to analyse them, isolate the problems and come up with solutions to what they encounter during the production of these barriers.

This report has the following structure: we first describe the bill of materials and use it to plan the manufacturing tasks over eleven weeks on the basis of the delivery dates provided by the company itself, (section 1). Then past data is used with the aim to study lead times (section 2) and the quality of three components using SPC graphs (section 3). Following this analysis, now aware of general problems that could explain deviations beyond limits, we try investigating the corresponding causes in a fishbone diagram (section 3.4) before we finally focus on adequate inventory level (section 4) and suggest changes in the physical layout within the plant (section 5).

1. Simplified nomenclature graph

In this chapter we introduce the nomenclature graph of Plumettaz to provide us with the product structure regarding the barrier. We will also perform a Material Requirement Planning (MRP) in order to be able to look at any given...
