Assignment 12
I met with Christopher Sefa (Chris) who is in the owner and instructor at “Azonto Madness” based in Virginia. He was as excited as I was to go through with the interview. The following transcript is from the interview;
YAW: How did you get in the dance?
CHRIS: My father loves music and he took me everywhere with him when I was younger so I fell in love with music and obviously music without dancing is like cookies without milk, it does not taste too great.
YAW: What is Azonto?
CHRIS: Azonto is whatever you wish it to be. But Azonto is basically a dynamic dance originated from a high school in the central region of Ghana. It is a dance that is making waves all over the world. Most people love the dance because of the simple steps it involves, and how easy it is to get a message across just by making a few hand gestures.
YAW: What are some of the gestures and movements involved in this dance?
CHRIS: Basically, the Azonto dance involves the twisting of the right feet and the raising of the right hand up and down with the right hand moving towards the left leg. However, one can incorporate different types of dances into Azonto and still come out with a nice dance. Dances like Harlem Shake, Gangnam Style and Doggy have been incorporated into the dance by many people to make it more dynamic.
YAW: What makes Azonto so different from any other dance that has emerged from Africa over the past few years?
CHRIS: The growth and changes it has gone through since its emergence in late 2011 till now. It started out as mostly the twisting and moving of the hands and legs. With support from all over Africa and beyond, the dance is not just a Ghanaian dance, but an African one, for that matter. It has received support from various celebs like Chris Brown, Keri Hilson, Kevin Hart, and Wyclef Jean, to mention but a few.
YAW: Without physical actions, could you show or teach one how to do the dance?
CHRIS:...
