Unemployment and the Other Side

America has been in and out of periods of low employment in the past. That probably will not change in the future. Having talked with people whom appear to be doing well economically, only to realize that they did not want to talk about what they did for a living. Only to later find out from someone else that they have been looking for work for a while. Sometimes it is discovered that they got laid off. Esme E. Deprez talks about this behavior in “Study Shows Psychological Impact of Unemployment” when he introduces co-author Carl Van Horn, who says, “For many people, being unemployed is embarrassing. They are not interested in talking about it and think of it as their fault,” (qtd in Deprez, par. 4). Later it is revealed that these people had a number of problems, from marital troubles to health. One could be amazed and wonder what happened to them, and a phrase heard before comes to mind: sick with worry. Being unemployed can manifest into other problems as lack of transportation can also make a whole lot of other problems. Many know other people that depend on nutritional programs for new mothers and transportation assistance. Katie Wright talks about these programs being threatened. In “Debt Deal Leaves Americans Living in Rural Poverty Behind” when she says, “While entitlement programs that support low-income Americans such as SNAP/food stamps, unemployment insurance, Social Security, and Medicaid are exempt from the automatic cuts, discretionary programs that support education, infrastructure, nutritional supports for new moms and kids, transportation, and job training may be on the chopping block again.” (qtd in Wright, par. 7). What one hears about other people and reads in these stories and articles can leave a concerned feeling in one’s mind. Being unemployed is more damaging than just not having a job.
