JOURNAL ENTRY NUMBER ONE:

I don’t watch much television but during football season I like to flip through the channels every now and then. I have lived in this beautiful country for a little over 50 years and I can’t remember the last time there was this many headlines in the news. Of course there is the stock market that has everyone scrambling to hold off just about everything, there is what some news casts have called the most entertaining yet controversial presidential race in American history, other story lines include the pope to coming to America for the first time, the on going police shootings but to me none bigger than what is considered to be the worst refugee crisis in the history of mankind.

I was very puzzled when I first heard of this story. At first I didn’t pay much attention to it but then I kept hearing it over and over and over. So finally I decided to do some research on it. I pulled out my laptop and started doing some digging. What I found was both astonishing and saddening at the same time.

The numbers were both staggering and unbelievable, according to CNN well over 250,000 have been killed and over half of the country’s population has been displaced, with 4 million fleeing as refugees.

Now the question becomes, where do these people go, I myself have to admit that I am honestly divided when it comes to this subject. As an immigrant I can surely say that I understand the struggles that these people are going through. Imagine having to flee your homeland in an attempt to save your family from a civil war, it’s hard and no one should have to go though that.

On the other hand, ISIS has come out and said that they will exploit this crisis as an opportunity to penetrate entrance into specific countries including the United States of America. That to me is scary, I understand we have morals but at the same time, this can be seen seen as security concern that puts the American people at risk of being attacked.
