Jesus of Montreal

Although the particular movie titled Jesus of Montreal, released in 1989 was a large success, I do not believe the success was due to it's being a work of Biblical accuracy or even filmed with the intended viewership of Christians. Indeed, this religious satire is aimed at pointing out what the director views as flaws in the entire Christian religion. Arcand, who directed the movie did not hesitate to make his feelings towards the accuracy of the Bible known, going so far as to make sure the play script began with these words, "...What we know is pieced together by disciples centuries later. Disciples lie. They embellish." (Ronance, Gray pp 114). Even though this movie was intended to in essence poke fun at Jesus, and the historical events that occurred, I was able to grow my understanding of Jesus and His incredible life and death through two specific scenes in the movie.

The first of these scenes occurs when Daniel, the main actor, appeared before a judge who was very indecisive and wavering back and forth, easily swayed by the crowd (Jesus of Montreal 1989). I can only imagine the frustrations that this would cause, and how unfair and unjust the ruling that Pontius Pilot rendered upon Jesus was. This brought to mind how Jesus showed such patience with human nature, and such strong determination to bring honor to His Father by not disgracing himself through any violent outbursts or displays of anger in any way. The second is towards the end, when Daniel's organs are donated, and through his death others live. That act of Daniel's, and other ways he stood up for what's right, even simply speaking out against cruel treatment of others where he wrecked the advertising casting room, inspired me to find new, unique and practical ways to live like Jesus (Jesus of Montreal 1989). I realized that Jesus was indeed a revolutionary man who defied evil, and was not afraid to call people out for...
