I agree that it is essential to behave ethically when negotiating but mainly because of the way it is defined. The definition says it is a bargaining process between two or more parties each with its own aims, needs, and viewpoints. Seeking to discover a common ground and reach an agreement to settle a matter of mutual concern or resolve a conflict. So if all parties involved are truly interested in negotiating and reach a goal you must be willing to play by the rules. The people who believe there are no rules when it comes to negotiating are fools and choose not to play by them because they have seen small triumphant by using unethical practices to abuse negotiating processes. But I believe that sometimes when negotiating the rules of ethics and there purposes can get pushed and pulled to their limits. Ethics is defined as the study of standards of conduct and moral judgment; moral philosophy. Negotiating is about give and take everyone has to know what they want and be willing to play the required cards to work towards the goal that leads to everyone getting what they want. Sometimes this can become unethical because some people are greedy and are out for themselves and only themselves.
Unethical is defined as not conforming to approved standards of social or professional behavior. Your attitude or behavior during negotiating can determine the outcome and results or what is achieved for all parties good or bad. That is why I believe you need to behave ethically when negotiating so that everyone gains the things they want if not the results are always one sided. If one side believes you are not being honest or are withholding information you could risk all that you have gained in negotiation. “Ethical behavior is what all career people should aim to have.
