History of Praktiker

Praktiker is an international hypermarket chain offering home improvement and do-it-yourself goods. The organization is located in 6 European countries (Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Greece and Bulgaria). It was started in Hamburg where its first store was opened in 1978. Initially owned by ASKO, Praktiker became a division of Metro AG after the merger of ASKO with Metro Cash & Carry in 1995. It became a fully independent corporation - Praktiker AG - on 21 June 2007. After several financial challenges, in 2013 and 2014 most of the Eastern Europe subsidiaries were sold to several companies, most of these companies retained the Praktiker brand for their hypermarkets chains, thereby keeping the Praktiker brand (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praktiker, accessed October 21, 2015)

Praktiker Hellas opened its first store in November 1991 as a Do-it-yourself & Home Improvement store. This marked the introduction of the philosophy "do it yourself” (Do-it-Yourself) in Greece, providing integrated solutions to house wares, construction, garden, car and leisure to the Greek consumer. Στο τέλος του 1995 ολοκληρώθηκε η πρώτη φάση ανάπτυξης του δικτύου της εταιρείας με δύο ακόμη καταστήματα στην Αθήνα (Ταύρος, Αιγάλεω) και από ένα στις πόλεις Θεσσαλονίκη, Λάρισα και Πάτρα. Since 1991, Praktiker has grown rapidly with 14 mega stores in the major cities (e.g. Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras etc.) of the country (a total area of 87,000 sqm), 4 of which are based in Athens. It also has a rapidly growing e-shop, offers 50,000 products and serves over 600,000 customers annually.
