Servant Leadership and Organizational Behavior

Organizational behavior is a study of the influence that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations. This study is centered squarely on the relationships and situations that occur in the workplace. Because the workplace is the setting for this study, there are accompanying parameters that a study of organizational behavior must remain within. These parameters are largely defined within the topics of behavior related to jobs, work, absenteeism, employment turnover, productivity, human performance, and management.

Servant leadership is a style of leading/managing that is practiced with the intention of offering support above all else. Serving first needs to be high on the list of desires for any leader aspiring to practice this method. The primary goal of servant leaders, that is those practicing servant leadership, is to empower their employees and co-workers with a sense of support for whatever tasks they are currently facing. By serving the employees in this way and making their needs a priority, they often yield results that go well beyond initial expectations. This is one of many styles of managing that take a step outside of the confines of traditional managing that have been practiced for years.

Servant leadership is an unusual concept to people that are used to management that breathes down their neck and offers little support. These people may have been primarily exposed to leaders that simply demand results without facilitating the process that yields said results. This type of leadership may get results from the type of people that work best when under the gun, but many talented people buckle under pressure that is that intense.
