Employers are expected to take reasonable practicable steps to safeguard their employees against any reasonably foreseeable danger in the work place (Reindero, 2012). The Security Directors like any other director is responsible for making tough decisions on a daily basis. As a result of the wide scope of their job, security personnel are often relied upon to fill multiple roles and responsibilities. Security plays a key role in protecting a business, company or organization’s assets. And to fully understand and fathom this role, it is essential to examine the security director’s professional responsibilities, the importance of internal and external relationships to the fulfillment of the security department's mission, and the broad spectrum of activities in which security operatives involve themselves to protect an organization's assets.

Professional Responsibilities

The security director’s primary professional responsibility is to maintain a safe and secure environment for both employees and customers by establishing and enforcing security procedures and policies; supervising the security personnel force. To accomplish this, the Security director will need to protect company employees and assets by first establishing physical security measures. According to American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), there are eight main categories of physical security; crime prevention through environmental design (CPTD); physical barriers and site hardening; physical entry and access controls; security lighting; intrusion detection systems; video surveillance; security personnel; and security policies and procedures (ASIS, 2014).
