Community Health Care Issue

Health care issues in local communities can be a problem if not addressed. Although some health issues are not as prevalent in communities as others, influenza is a problem. The influenza virus or the flu has been affecting our community for several years but has not become a pandemic. This paper will discuss how long influenza has been a problem, how it has affected our community and how the community has responded.

There are different types of influenza that can affect the community. Avian influenza surfaced in 2003 and was widespread through poultry and birds, which increased the risk of human exposure. Although Avian influenza had not become a pandemic, it is possible. As of now the current form of the virus, the H5N1 is sporadic but had affected many individuals. Because of the rapid progression of the Avian influenza, individuals must educate him or herself how to avoid the illness. Human forms of influenza are becoming more prevalent as well allowing for more opportunity to affect populations in all areas of the world.

In the local community, influenza has made an impact. Individuals such as the elderly or the individuals in an immunocompromised state have been affected. Pregnant women and children have been affected as well. Although there has not been a pandemic, there have been deaths caused by influenza. For this reason, the community has a fear of the illness and are taking precautions at all times to avoid the illness.

The community working together with state and local government agencies are working toward isolating the influenza virus to keep the community healthy. As stated, collaborative sharing of clinical and treatment data from affected patients in different regions and countries is essential t o improve understanding of this disease and to refine optimal case management (WHO, 2010).
