Unit 6 Assignment

In the unit reading, there are four steps in developing a Bureaucratic Control System. According to Batesman and Snell (2013) the four steps are “setting performance standards, measuring performance, comparing performance against the standards and determining deviation, taking action to correct problems and reinforce success.” Dalman and Lei are in need of creating the missing section of their employee handbook. By using the four step control process, they can correct the problem of misreporting hours.

Step 1: “Setting Performance Standards”

The first thing that Dalman and Lei need to do is a set performance standard. According to Bateman and Snell (2013) when setting a performance standard a person first needs to figure out the “quantity, quality, time used, and cost”. Dalman and Lei need to addresses how much work is needed to be done. They need be able to identify the total amount of mistake that can be made during the a specific time period. They also need to identify how accurate, effective and useful the work needs to be. They should determine the date that the work is to be done. Finally, they need to address a budget of either money, personnel, or time that could be measured with a fiscal year.

Step 2: “Measuring Performance”

Next step is measuring performance. When measuring performance Dalman and Lei need to observe the number of times the employee is on time, late, or absent for work. They need to identify if the quality of work is done at an average standard, above standard, or below standard. They need to observe personal habits to see if the employee is exhibiting negative behaviors.

Step 3: “Comparing performance against the standards and determining deviation”
