Abortion Is Not Immoral

"Overturning the ban on abortion ... was a profoundly moral thing to do!" The debate over the morality of abortion has been at the center of political and social discussions throughout the twentieth century and continues to remain a contentious point. In the following viewpoint, Revolution newspaper presents the argument that abortion is morally just because women should be able to make the appropriate decisions for their own bodies without the interference of government bans and restrictions. Furthermore, the author maintains that it is immoral to force a woman to carry a pregnancy to term against her will because the pregnancy could be a threat to the mother's health and could result in the birth of a child who is unwanted and who will not receive the proper care. Revolution is the official publication of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA.

As you read, consider the following questions: 1. According to Revolution, what is contraception being equated to today? 2. According to Revolution, what is meant by the "whole story"? 3. Revolution states that a woman who has no control over her own body is no freer than whom? The stakes in the battle around abortion are very, very high. These right-wingers will not stop at banning abortion —the end of Roe v. Wade would not only be a horror in itself, but would set the stage for even worse. Theocrats like James Dobson and Paul Weyrich have built up a fascist movement by whipping people up against abortion and gay marriage. They won votes for Bush and Senate and House seats for other theocrats in the 2004 elections, and they collected signatures for ballot initiatives to ban gay adoption in the 2006 elections.
