Quattrone and Tversky’s Experiment of Self Deception
Quattrone and Tversky’s Experiment of Self Deception
“Experiments are studies involving intervention by the researcher beyond that required for measurements” (Cooper & Schindler, 2006, p. 274). Experiments help identify a problem and compile data for a solution, facts or a conclusion. In this paper, I will be discussing the study of Quattrone and Tversky’s self-deception experiment including: what the purpose of the study was, the sampling and variables used, and the reliability and validity of the study.
Purpose of Experiment
The purpose of Quattrone and Tversky’s experiment was to explore self-deception and the different levels of self-deception in people. Self-deception is the process of denying or arguing with oneself. It involves convincing oneself of what is and is not the truth (Encyclopedia.com, 2011). Quattrone and Tversky believed that everyone is guilty of self-deception especially in situations that things do not go our way or we do not get what we want.
Independent Variables in the Study
Independent variables are the causes or the factors that can be manipulated in an experiment, examples include, time and temperatures (Cooper & Schindler, 2006). In Quattrone and Tversky’s experiment, the independent variable was time. The researchers tricked the participants into thinking that the span of time their arm is submerged into cold water would tell them their current health status. This deception would allow the participants to achieve the results that they truly desired.
Dependent Variables in the Study
Dependent variables are the logical variables whose value depends on the independent variable. This measures the outcome and effectiveness of the conclusion (Cooper & Schindler, 2006). In Quattrone and Tversky’s experiment, the dependent variable was giving the participants other tasks to think about during the time their arm was submerged into cold water. The researchers really wanted to...
