Intro to Corrections

As a part of the Criminal Justice System as a whole, there is the corrections system. Typically corrections involves the three Ps. Parole, Probation, and Prison. However, corrections is not just limited to parole, prison, and probation, it is “the variety of programs, services, facilities, and organizations responsible for the management of individuals who have been accused or convicted of criminal offenses” (Clear, p.8). Three other services offered by the corrections system other than parole, probation, and prison are Re-entry programs, work release programs, and electronic monitoring programs.

As a part of the corrections system, Re-Entry programs handle the transitioning of offenders from incarceration back into the community. Re-Entry programs have fostered the growth of corrections by enhancing public safety, reducing the rates of recidivism, and fostering partnerships to assist in providing prevention, intervention, and diversionary services. By reintegrating offenders into the community, these types of programs decrease the chances of overcrowding and reduce the number of new prisons needed.

As a part of the corrections system, Work Release programs allow selected inmates to work at paid employment in the community during the last months of their confinement. Work release programs have fostered the growth of corrections by allowing the inmate to gradually work themselves back into the community, obtain gainful employment to have after their release, and preserve emotional and financial ties with their families as well as their communities. These programs reduce recidivism and keep crime rates down by assisting in the transitioning of an offender from incarceration back into the community with a steady income.
