MAGNETIC FIELD LAB REPORT
(5 Pts.) PONDER the Question: Does the shape of a magnet affect its magnetic field?
(5 Pts. ) Gather Information:
Define magnetic field:
Define magnetic domain:
What are poles?
(10 Pts.) Hypothesis:
Predict in a short sentence or two what each magnetic field is most likely to look like when TWO of each of the magnets described below are REPELLING or ATTRACTING:
WAND MAGNETS
Repel –
Attract –
HORSESHOE MAGNETS
Repel –
Attract –
BAR MAGNETS
Repel –
Attract –
RING MAGNETS
Repel –
Attract –
(5 Pts.) Test Your Hypothesis
Materials
page protector with iron filings, two wand magnets, two horseshoe magnets, two bar magnets, two ring magnets
Procedure
Be sure that you have filled out the HYPOTHESIS section of this lab report PRIOR to beginning the procedure. You must PREDICT what will happen with the iron filings before you begin working with them.
Gather materials and explore (in other words, play with the magnets). Get each type of magnet to attract and repel with one another.
FOR EACH MAGNET SET . . .
Lay them flat on the table so that they are REPELLING one another. A member of the group may have to hold them still.
Lay the page protector with iron filings on top of the magnet set and gently shake the page protector and observe what the iron filings are doing
Draw a sketch of what you see for each magnet set
Repeat steps 3 through 6 with the magnets ATTRACTING one another
(30 Pts.) Sketch Your Observations
