An unknown substance was present in Nelson’s blood. What was this substance and how did it get into his blood? What evidence do you have to support this?

The unknown substance is the antivenom. The anti-toxin will bind to anything with a certain structure. When comparing the pictures, you see that the spider venom, which reacts with the anti-toxin has a very similar chemical structure to Nelson’s peanut allergy drug.

The molecular weight of the unknown substance in Nelson’s blood is 765.82? Why?

The formula weight of the anti-toxin and compound C is 598.66 amu. Adding that to the formula weight of the peanut allergy drug of 167.16 equals the formula weight of the unknown substance that was found in Nelson’s bloodstream (765.82).

What is the MW of the allergy drug?

167.16 amu

What is the MW of the anti-venom?

598.66

The coroner says that Nelson died from peanut allergy, yet he was taking a drug for this. Can you explain why he would still die from peanuts?

An unknown substance in his blood combined with his peanut allergy pills and deactivated it.

Did Nelson take his medication that day? Was the correct concentration of medication present in his blood?

Yes he did. No, he was supposed to have 10 mg of peanut allergy drug in his blood, but for some reason there was far less than this in his blood stream

You found an abstract on Sam’s desk. Is this evidence relevant to your solution? Why or why not?

Yes, because this was a clear description of how compound C combines with the spider toxin in which it then deactivates it. It also states that compound C will combine to anything the is similar to the antivenom.

How did Sam know that giving Nelson the antivenom would kill him?

He knew that Nelson’s peanut allergy pills were similar to.

Sam knew that if Nelson had anti-toxin in his bloodstream and that it bound with his allergy medication it would neutralized it, making him susceptible to his peanut allergy....
