When selecting a team for a project the first layer of screening should be based on their professional skills and insuring that their skills meet the needs of the project. Check the history of the candidates someone who has done the job in the past and has a history of getting things done is a great team player to add to the team People with positive attitudes, good work ethics, respectful to others and open to learning new things will help lift the team’s enthusiasm, one skeptic can spoil the team’s outlook entirely. The riskier the project the more diversity you need in the team (Dorset House, 2004). It is always good to have left thinkers as well as right thinkers to complete a superb project because skill and creativity yields great results. No project runs on the ability of technical competency alone. A project leader must be selected someone that can easily work with other people and has leadership experience. Communication plays a major role as well (Kaiser, 2012). People who want to bring quick closure to decisions are not ideal for project selection because their desire for closure can lead them to focus on a strategy before considering the alternatives. It is always helpful if team members have worked together on previous projects. Familiarity supersedes all doubt amongst the team members and availability is said to be the No.1 factor according to How To Pick A Project Team by Kathleen Melymuka. In addition to selecting a team fewer is better. Project team’s effectiveness is inversely proportional to its mass (Tomczyk, 2004). As long as the project direction and role is well understood it should pull together. Leverage matters and one key to obtaining it are good relationships with other managers.
