SWOT Analysis

In looking at the ways that PMH can improve their offering and determine if a satellite clinic is a wise investment is to perform an SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) analysis. According to Stroud (2011, P 75) a SWOT analysis is an important part of business planning and should be part of the initial creation of a business plan. Because of this, it is important for PMH to conduct a SWOT analysis as they look at expanding and opening up a satellite clinic. The information that we gather from this SWOT analysis can be used to develop a sustainable strategy for PMH long term.

Strengths

PMH has a very strong in the support it has from the community. Over the 100 year history of PMH, there have been times where they were close to closure, but support from the community kept the facility running. This is a strength for the facility, showing that the patients understand the need for care and is a benefit in building both clinical staff morale and retention. Additionally, the support of the community directly correlates with patient satisfaction, and the overall feeling that the facility is providing adequate care in the community.

Emergency care is also a strength for PMH. In 2012, they were approved as a level 4 trauma center (Hamill, 2012, P 1-3). The ability able to handle the higher acuity cases means that PMH has to transfer out less regularly, and can benefit from the increased financial aspect of keeping patients within their facility. Increased ability to handle emergency situations, and hopefully decrease the mortality rate for cases in the community.
