1.1 Background of the Study
Football is the number one sport in most countries around the world. Countries like Brazil, Argentina, Frances and Portugal is well known in leading the world football. Every year about more than 100 countries have their match to qualify in the world tournament that being organized by International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). FIFA is the international governing body of association football responsible for the organization of football's major international tournaments. This tournament is called ‘World Cup’ which only will be in action every 4 years and has the biggest audience across the world (Koning et. Al, 2003).
Malaysia has not been spared to make football as a major sport in this country. In Malaysia we have Malaysia Football Association (FAM) that role such as FIFA in handling football tournament. Malaysia Super League, Malaysia Premier League, Malaysia Cup and Malaysia FA Cup are the top football tournaments which had been watched by all Malaysian.
Our focus is in Malaysia cup. The 2015 edition is the 89th season of Malaysia Cup and began on August with a preliminary round. A total of 16 teams took part in this prestigious competition. The teams are divided into 4 groups of 4. The group leaders and runners-up teams in the groups after 6 matches qualify to the quarterfinals. In this competition, the top 10 teams from 2015 Malaysia Super League is joined by the top 4 teams from 2015 Malaysia Premier League. The remaining 2 teams from 2015 Malaysia Super League and the team who finished 5th and 6th place in the 2015 Malaysia Premier League will battle it out in the playoffs for the remaining 2 spots.
In practice, there are numerous factors in football that can affect the results of tournament. These factors will be elaborated in chapter 2.
