Disease 1 - AIDS

AIDS is a viral disease caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In 1981 in United State, the first clinical AIDS was observed. In 1982, the CDC first used the term AIDS, which is stand for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. In the same year, AIDS cases were reported in some European countries. In 1983, a female infection cases proved that ADIS could be passed via heterosexual sex. Also in 1983, all major transmission routes of AIDS were identified and the first set of recommendation about preventing “AIDS transmission” was published. Now, AIDS is still threating human`s health. In 2014, 36.9 million people in total were living with AIDS and 1.2 million people dead because of AIDS.

Disease 2 - Poliomyelitis

Poliomyelitis, which is called polio as well, is caused by the poliovirus. The existence of Poliomyelitis could date back to prehistoric times; the pictures of young children with withered limbs were painted and carved. In 1916, poliomyelitis first became a serious epidemic in America. After that, Hundreds of thousands of children were paralyzing poliomyelitis every year. In 1929, “iron lung” was developed to treat poliomyelitis. In 1953, polio vaccine was developed by Dr. Jonas Salk. The vaccine controlled the disease effectively. Nowadays, the incidence of poliomyelitis has decreased by 99%.

Disease 3 - Rabies

Rabies is a viral disease which can lead warm blood animals die. People who lived in 300BC had understood that rabies could be passed by animal bites. In 19th century, people know more about the transmission of rabies. In 1851, the first vaccine experiment to dogs was demonstrated. During 1920s, domestic animal vaccination was developed and became widely used. Since then, rabies was gradually reduced. Today, although there is no special treatment, post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is used for people to prevent rabies. Rabies cases occur in every year, but the successful rate of PEP is nearly 100%.
