CRISIS IN EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION

Which is the relationship between the Economy and the education of a country?

Currently, educational system depends on the resources destined to this field. The decrease of the number of contributors to Social Security is causing Governments’ difficulties to maintain a quality educational system. We can note this in the reduction in Erasmus scholarships, teachers, schools and diverse aspects.

We are going to discuss a few aspects on the economy and education of Holland and Spain. Such as: the evolution of the Spanish and Dutch education, the economic crisis and the consequences and the educational methods by the European Union.

Education, although it’s one of the fundamental rights of every man, involves a great investment that the Government must guarantee with the highest possible quality.

Since the outbreak of the crisis, in a very significant number of countries flashbacks in education and labour situation are taking place.

The crisis in education has also affected unevenly according to the educational system of each country, for example, in the case of Spain, with a decentralized educational system (divided by the Autonomous Communities), there are wide differences in the way in which the crisis has concerned every community, due to, in many cases, the reduction in tax collection

Before knowing the situation facing our country, it would be appropriate to introduce the topic attending to the measures implemented in our European neighbours.

• France: new budget foresees the loss of 8.967 jobs in primary education and 4.800 in secondary.

• United Kingdom: strikes are multiplying due to the increase in the workload of the teachers and the rise in University fees.

• Greece: with Romania, Greece stands out as the country with more drastic cutbacks in education. In just two years has carried out the dismissal of more than 4,800 teachers and 600 administrative in secondary education. Salaries have been reduced and it’s...
