What is the difference between being a manager and being a leader? Are these terms synonymous? Management guru Peter F. Drucker once said, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” You might begin the study of Chapter Seventeen by asking your students for their perspectives on these questions and the quotation from Dr. Drucker.
The important role that leadership plays in organizational performance is illustrated in “A Manager’s Dilemma.” Judy McGrath, chairman and CEO of MTV Networks (MTV), is responsible for leading this $7 billion subsidiary of Viacom with a reach of more than 440 million households in 169 countries around the globe. A major challenge facing McGrath is how to influence her employees to maintain the bold, innovative style that won for MTV the title of Forbes’ “product of the year” in 1981.
