Equations are all around us in every business, we just don't always realize it. For this assignment I chose to use an equation that would be encountered at a spa by a customer trying to decide which services they could get for a certain amount of money. My equation would be 15X + 20Y = 350. In this equation X would represent the number of tanning sessions a customer could buy for 15 per 30 minute session. The variable Y would represent the number of massage sessions a customer could buy for 20 per 15 minute session. The total amount the customer has to spend is represented by 350.

There are a vast array of possible solutions to this equation. One possible solution would be X = 10 and Y = ? which would mean that we would solve this by first looking at the given X = 10 and use this to put in our equation 15(10) + 20Y = 350. Then we would multiply 15 and 10 to get 150 and the following would be the equation: 150 - 150 + 20Y = 350 - 150. After that we would finish the math to get 10 as the answer to Y as well. Another possible solution would be to have the answer for Y being 4 and then solve for X using the following equation: 15X+20(4)=350, 15X=270 and X=18.

Equations are used all around us in our everyday life from the cashier at the local grocery store using basic math equation to give back the appropriate change to a customer to an accountant using equations for payroll. Where I work, we

use a basic equation of what customer pays minus what we pay equals our profit. This equation for a book of stamps would be 10.40 - 10.00 = .40 profit. In payroll, we use hours worked times pay per hour to get gross wages. The equation would look like this if you took an hourly employee making 9.50 an hour who worked 34.55 hours in the week their gross would be 9.50*34.55=328.23.

It is a little known fact that most adults do not see the use of mathematics in their everyday life. We tend to look at math as a waste...
