Sports policy and the sports environment are major determinants of how safe a sport is and if appropriately governed and supported can assist in preventing the occurrence of sports injuries. Sports policy determines rules of sports and activities, modified rules for children, matching of opponents and use of protective equipment to promote safe participation and assist in preventing unnecessary sports injuries. The sports environment, made up of grounds, equipment and facilities needs to be designed and maintained to provide a safe playing environment and coincide with sports policy to promote the safest playing area and sport for people of all ages and skill levels.
Rules of sports and activities help control games, prevent injuries and increase safety. They protect players through penalties and consequences, and through this increases safety and participation. In dangerous sports or full contact sports rules are often stringent to help minimise the chance of serious injury. For example in rugby league there are strict rules not to do high tackles or spear tackles and in gridiron players are not allowed to go into tackles with their helmets. When participating in sports it is the players responsibility to respect the rules that govern the sport, as disregarding them promotes dangerous play and serious injury for themselves and other players. Sports injuries are lessened by policy and rules where sports deter foul and dangerous play by enforcing penalties, such as yellow and red cards in soccer and free shots in basketball. In some sports where the environment can be dangerous to the athletes’ wellbeing, rules are emplaced to protect the athlete. For example Tennis has a heat policy where athletes cannot compete if the wet-bulb globe measure reaches an index of 31-33 (It is too hot).
