Digital Nation

In the documentary, Digital Nation, Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) documents the impact of modern technology in the lives of different demographics of people. They characterize many different aspects of technology how they affect people’s everyday lives and how they play a vital role in the way businesses market to consumers.

Multitasking is seen as a strength in most current students. Being able to use their phones, listen to a lecture and type a paper at the same time. On any campus you can find students on their laptops, having Facebook open, typing notes and sending messages to friends. However, when doing a study, a psychologist found that students were actually terrible multitaskers. Those devices they think help them accomplish more than ever before have become a distraction.

Distractions from what is going on around them is something that teacher’s battle with when it comes to their students. Some trying using technology in order to keep their students attention. Besides current students, younger generations are also suffering from the distraction of technology, spending 50 hours a week locked in to video games, cell phones and the internet. Causing a less mentally developed generation. Distractions while driving are being proven to be more dangerous than drinking and driving.

Not being able to drive a car without looking at our cell phones is a sign that there is a more psychological phenomena happening. Technology has become an addiction. In South Korea, they have internet café’s called PC Bombs. Filled with hundreds of locked in youth glaring at computer screens playing games. The addiction to technology has caused some to die in the PC Bombs from lack of food and hydration. In order to protect their youth from over using technology they created internet rescues camps with consist of 2 weeks detox from their computers, phones, and games.
