1. Differentiate between bacterial infection and bacterial intoxication. Give an example of bacterial infection and bacterial intoxication:

Bacterial infections are caused from bacteria that gets into our bodies systems and grows. Antibiotics are able to cure this infection. An example is typhoid fever. Bacterial intoxication is consuming food that has bad toxins in it. An example is Bacillus cereus.

2. Describe rotavirus infections; include transmission, symptoms, and prevention. How would you effectively treat a client suffering from rotavirus?

Rotavirus infections are caused by RNA viruses getting into our system. Rotavirus is transmitted by stool. Washing your hands and if you do get the virus, taking vaccines will prevent spread. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, dehydration, temp of 103 or higher, or vomit.

3. Discuss the importance of E. coli as part of our intestinal flora.

E. coli helps produce some vitamins for digestion and also regulates bacteria going through your system.

4. Discuss giardiasis; include causative agent, transmission, symptoms, and prevention. How would you effectively treat a client suffering from giardiasis?

Giardiasis is a disease of the intestinal tract caused by a microscopic parasite that causes cramping, bloating, nausea and diarrhea. It is transmitted either person to person or through food consumption. Prevention from giardiasis would be washing your hands before dealing with people or food contact and use purified water system. If you don’t have many symptoms and low risk of spread then doctors won’t normally prescribe you because it does go away in two to three weeks.
