Personal Trainer

My chosen career path, that I am currently enrolled in school for is to become a personal trainer. I plan on working for myself so adding additional employees or contingent workers may not be an option when there is an influx of clients. Personal training is a field that has seen employment growth and is projected to continue to grow, at least through 2022.

In the United States, as of 2012, there was about 267,000 jobs in this field and is to add about 33,500 to employ a total of 300,500 people by the year 2022 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014). Nationally, there is going to be about a 13% gain in number of employees in this field. In Pennsylvania, the state that I live in has about 11,750 employees in this field as of 2012 with an additional 1320 additional employees for a projection of 13,070 by 2022 (Employment Projections Dashboard Data Results, 2015). This is a gain of 11.2%, slightly below the national growth projection.

In just about any other field, there is a busy time for personal trainers as well. It is well known that January, is the time that most people make resolutions to get in shape or losing weight. Therefor there is usually a rush to purchase gym memberships or seek the help of a personal trainer. To handle the influx of clients I could try to partner up new clients with older clients who do not mind training with someone. This way, I can make more money while saving the each of the clients’ money as well and do not have to worry about filling a spot if the new client loses interest in a few weeks (How Do You Prepare for and HAndle the Busy Month of January, 2008). Adding group classes can work for busy and slow times as well. Working with a group of people at once allows you to service many people at one time when there is an increase in clients.
