Essay for Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe is consider an author who has wrote many Gothic stories that involve several different kinds of elements. In particular stories he wrote such as; Tell-Tale-Heart, Black Cat, and Pre-Mature Burial he used grotesque, extreme situations, and dark setting. These elements were combined together to create Gothic stories from the mind of Edgar Allan Poe.

One of the elements Poe mobilized was grotesque. Grotesqueness is used to intrigue a reader, as well as, keep interest and suspense, and embraces bizarre behaviors and deaths. The Tell-Tale-Heart has this element because the narrator murdered his victim in a disastrous from in which he took apart the victim body (another way of saying, dismembered the corpse) and placed the body parts beneath the planks of the floor board in the house. This is a kind of body snatching grotesque because the victim is killed and the body is hidden to not be found. In another story, Black Cat, the narrator was a good man until he started drinking. When he became intoxicated with alcohol, he abused his wife and his beloved black cat, Pluto. He cared for the cat but his other personality brought out the meanness in him and therefore would cause him to harm the black cat. Eventually, the narrator ended up hanging the black cat outside with a noose held by a tree. Bizarre death is a kind of grotesque comprised with this story. "One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree; ... " (Pg. 164) the next short story, Pre-Mature Burial, people were buried alive because they were assumed dead by the appearance of how they were perceived to be advanced away to a higher life. One lady was suffered with illness and appeared dead because of her appearance; face pinched and sunken outline, lips marble pallor, eyes lusterless, and no warmth of body.
