Of the benefits discussed in the book, which ones are required by law? Which are not?

The required employee benefits are as followed: social security, unemployment insurance, workers compensation, family and medical leave, and COBRA benefits. The benefits that are not required by law are paid leave, dental insurance, health insurance, and retirement plans.

Describe the considerations when developing medical benefits. Which do you think would be the most important to you as the HR manager?

As an HR manager, the most important benefits to me are unemployment insurance, family and medical leave, and COBRA benefits. I want to make sure that my employees are completely taken care of and that in case of an emergency, things won’t be stressful. I want my employees to feel valued and secured in their job.

Visit websites of three companies you might be interested in working for. Review the benefits they offer and write about the benefits they offer and whether you like their benefit package - why or why not?

The three companies I am interested in working for are REI, North face and Nike. Over the years, these companies have acquired positive reputations because of the way they treat their employees. REI, for example, gives every employee holidays off. This is huge for a retail company. For REI to value family and personal time over making money speaks miles to the employees. They feel valued and respected. The North Face offers insurance such as: health, dental, vision, life and disability. The North Face offers maternity and paternity leave, as well as child care and fertility assistance. They also have financial and retirement plans such as pensions plans, 401k plans, and retirement plans. Nike offers a retirement plan, bonuses and employee stock purchase plans. I would chose to work at all of these companies if I could. Each company values their employees and compensates them as so.
