In today’s society there is a problem with criminal liability in the world of sports. People love the addiction of gambling on sporting events, which can result in crimes either violent or “white collar” crimes. There are many crimes that can go unnoticed such as ones dealing with corporate scandals along with the ones that slip through the cracks at the lowest level of criminal intent. Criminal liability has two elements that must exist for this theory to come into play: (1) the performance of a prohibited act and (2) a specified state of mind or intent on the part of the actor. These two elements must occur together for the criminal to be liable (Miller 108). There are many types of crimes from property crime to white collar crimes to cyber crimes. Crimes may happen in the places that you can least expect them too such as professional sporting teams or events.

Corporate crimes have a different type of liability; whereas, the company itself is considered a person, but it cannot be imprisoned, only fined. This corporation (Penn State) cannot be imprisoned, but only fined and liable for everything that went on. “It is impossible to know what the cost to Penn State ultimately might be, but there is a chance that it will be millions of dollars” (Longstreth). I believe the legal actions that were brought to this corporation were exemplary because they did not only imprison the person involved with the sex scandal, but they went into the entire thing and prosecuted everyone that oversaw the entire program as a whole. From the highest member of the program to the people who swept this under the rug for so many years are just as liable as the criminal himself.

Everyday there are “white collar” crimes that are going on in the world....
